A locally registered inshore fishing vessel named ‘Joy George’ struck a rock near the shores of Elmina Castle around 12:00 PM on Wednesday, August 20 during voyage.

The vessel, which operates with an inbuilt engine has registration number CR-338-EL and is owned by a Ghanaian.

A brief report by the Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission on the incident said all 23 crew members on board are safe with no injuries or casualties recorded.

The vessel is currently stationed at the Brake waters, a location adjacent to the historic Elmina Castle in the Central Region.

Community members, local fishermen and technical team of the Fisheries Commission were quick to respond, ensuring the crew’s safety and helped towed the vessel to safety.

Initial assessments suggest the incident occurred while the vessel was navigating close to shore, possibly during routine operations.

The Technical team of the Fisheries Commission is expected to tow the vessel ashore by noon of Thursday, August 21, 2025.

“Further investigations will be carried out to determine the exact cause of the incident and to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” a source told 3News.
