The Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM) is calling on the government to institutionalize the legacies of the victims of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter accident.
GAAM said this is the only way generations will be eager to ‘die’ for the nation because these victims were on their way to work for the nation. GAAM in a statement signed by its National President, Frank Ackah Nelson, to commiserate with the families of the helicopter accident victims said, “we hope and pray that their contributions to our nation will not be forgotten to serve as a lesson for generations unborn”.
The statement said “the Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM) is deeply saddened by the tragic, sudden and unprecedented helicopter crash that claimed the lives of illustrious sons of the land (Ghana) which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, near Adansi Sikaman in the Ashanti Region”.
“The crash claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians, including senior government officials and military personnel”, it added.
Mr. Ackah Nelson said “we, members of GAAM extend our heartfelt condolences to the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, our sector Minister, Hon. Ibrahim Abdullah, the Government of Ghana, the bereaved families, the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and all Ghanaians affected by this devastating national tragedy”.
The statement acknowledged that “Ghana has suffered a great loss with the deaths of dedicated public servants, including the late Dr. Omane-Boamah who until his sudden demise was the Defence Minister, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who was the Minister for Science, Environment, Technology and Innovation”.
“We also mourn the untimely demise of the remaining six individuals who were on board the Ghana Armed Forces’ helicopter, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed who was the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, who was the NDC Vice Chairman, Mr. Samuel Aboagye who was the Obuasi East NDC Parliamentary candidate, Squadron Leader Peter Bafimi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo-Mensah”.
The GAAM statement said “in the midst of this tragedy and devastating accident, GAAM is urging journalists, social media influencers, bloggers, the general public, to exercise the utmost responsibility and sensitivity in their reportage and broadcasting of their images”.
“We must remember that behind every name in Africa and in particular, Ghana, is a family grieving a loved one”.
The statement urged the public to avoid sensationalism, respect the privacy of the bereaved families, and report only accurate, verified information.
Praise efforts of Assembly Member
The GAAM also praised its member who helped the security services and government officials who were at the scene.
“We are also aware of our member in Adansi Obuasi Electoral Area, Hon. Matthew Baah, whom we are told, provided an immense support to the government officials who were there to salvage the situation”.
The statement said “Hon Baah, we say kudos. This is the work of an Assembly Member and we are proud of you. Continue doing the good job for mother Ghana. As we mourn our beloved ones, let us remember that we are one people with one destiny. God bless us all and may the soul of the eight departed rest in perfect peace”.
