The Member of Parliament for the Asante Akim North constituency, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has said that item number five found on the NPP’s executive crunch meeting agenda paper on Monday, February 19, was an opportunity to discuss new standing orders and not to change the majority leadership in parliament.

Mr Appiah-Kubi was speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3, Tuesday, February 20, following the growing contention of the party to change its leadership in parliament.

Item number five on the meeting agenda paper sighted by 3News captured “proposed change in the parliamentary leadership.”

However, according to 3News sources at the party headquarters, item five on the agenda paper was dropped.

“I was a little late into the meeting…when I got there, we were on item four discussing the fallout from the primaries,” he said, adding, “and then when we finished, we were only just informed at that time that the next item had been dropped.”

Mr Appiah-Kubi emphasised that the move was not to change the current majority leadership in parliament but rather for the party to deliberate on the new standing order passed by the house.

“Today [Feb. 20, 2024], various people have discussed attempts to remove our leaders. I didn’t see it as such. I thought it was an opportunity for the party to explain the new position of the statute that has been passed,” the NPP national executive member said.

He also dismissed the assertion that he is gaining notoriety for going against party norms.

The Asante Akim North lawmaker maintained that he is rather consistent with what he believes in and that he will “always stand by his beliefs.” He was the leader of some 80 majority MPs who called on President Akuffo-Addo to relieve the former minister of finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, of his post, two years ago.

The National Executive of the NPP held a crunch meeting on Monday, February 19, to discuss the fallout from the party’s just-ended parliamentary primaries and the campaign team for the 2024 election, amongst other things.

Meanwhile, the party has announced its 2024 campaign team ahead of the December 7 elections. The various election committees were contained in a statement signed by the party’s general secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua.
