Ransford Edward Van Gyampo, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana, is suggesting “professional training” for National Security operatives regarding how they effect arrests and conduct searches.
He believes the operatives’ methods, such as ransacking people’s homes and offices during investigations, do not reflect professionalism.
According to Gyampo, security personnel can conduct searches to uncover evidence or gather information without necessarily destroying people’s property, as they’ve been doing in recent operations.
Speaking on the KeyPoints show on TV3 on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Prof. Gyampo, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, lauded the investigations being carried out by the Attorney-General’s office and security agencies.
However, he admonished security operatives to avoid their ‘rambo-style’ approach, which doesn’t reflect positively on their work.
“I applaud what the A-G is doing. I commend the OSP for what he is doing and I want them to continue with this approach.
“But in doing so, let their officials, especially those national security agents, when they have to effect arrest, when they have to go into people’s homes and offices to search, let them not do so like armed-robbers,” he stated.
He noted that the manner in which they carry out their work doesn’t reflect the President’s personality, which is putting him in a bad light.
“Because these things do not reflect the non-rascal persona of John Mahama. I favour every investigation so long as it is going to unearth a problem that will help us to fashion a solution to it,” he stated.
Prof. Gyampo cited the recent raid on the offices of Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) by National Security, which he said could have been conducted in a manner that wouldn’t have destroyed any property.
“I think it’s about time we trained our national security operatives to behave like professionals,” he stated.
