Ghanaian actor and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has visited tomato farms in the Upper East Region, expressing satisfaction at the progress made by local farmers.

In a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, February 23, 2026, Mr. Dumelo said he had encouraged farmers in the region last year to take up tomato farming during the dry season.

“Yesterday, when I visited their farms, I was happy to see acres of tomatoes being harvested,” he wrote.

The actor-turned-politician assured farmers of the Ministry of Agriculture’s continued support to expand production and scale up for the next dry season in 2027.

“It is my prayer that by this time next year, the trucks heading to Burkina Faso to buy tomatoes will have been reduced and diverted to purchase from these hardworking Ghanaian farmers,” he added.

The visit comes days after the tragic killing of Ghanaian market women in Burkina Faso while returning home with tomatoes, underscoring the importance of boosting local production and reducing dependency on imports.

Most importantly, the visit highlights the need to strengthen domestic agriculture and support smallholder farmers nationwide, enabling them to produce more tomatoes to feed Ghanaians and supply other countries.
