A late strike by forward Jerry Afriyie was what the Ghana U-20 men’s football team needed to break their Ugandan counterparts to win Gold at the 2023 African Games.

The two sides went into Friday’s final yet to lose a game at the tournament.

Both Ghana and Uganda had won their respective groups and saw off tough opponents in the semi-finals.

Ghana beat Senegal 1-0 in their semi-final game to reach the final

while Uganda came from two goals down to beat Congo 4-2.

Therefore, the final was marked by connoisseurs as going to be a tough one.

And to lived up to that billing.

For almost the entire duration of the game, both sides failed to break their opponents though Ghana saw the ball hit the back of the net twice. Both goals were ruled out by the center referee.

With a few minutes to end the game and extra time staring his side in the face, Afriyie took on his opponents and hit a low shot to beat the Ugandan shot stopper.

It was joy at the Accra Sports Stadium as the goal secured the vital win for the hosts.

Ghana, as a result, win both men’s and women’s football at this year’s African Games.
