The Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has condemn the torturing of a 12-year-old boy in her constituency.
The boy was seen in a viral video tied with a nylon rope, hanging from the roof of a building and being subjected to severe beatings by two adults for stealing GHC200 at New Ankasa, community near Elubo.
The Police in Half Assini Division quickly moved in to rescue the 12-year-old boy after the viral video was shown on Onua News’ Nsem Titire on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
The police also arrested two suspects lssah Morro, 58, and Suleman Abdul Rashid, 27, who were seen in the video torturing and applying a substance suspected to be pepper in the boy’s wounds.
Suspects are currently in Police custody assisting with investigation.
The victim has received medical attention and has been handed over to his father.
Reacting to the development in an interview with Onua News, Madam Affo-Toffey said she was disappointed and panicked the moment she saw the viral video.
“I am totally against it. I had calls from the Constituency on the issue, but I panicked when I saw the video. As a mother, as an MP and as a woman, I do not condone this act. I am not for that. With all humility, I had the opportunity to live outside the country for some years, and I know how child abuse is. I know the punishment involved in child abuse so when it comes to these kinds of things, I don’t entertain it”.
The MP said “it is true our culture encourages punishment when a child goes wrong but not to this level”.
“We are in the 21st century when a child goes wrong, we don’t maltreat them like they did so I am totally against this. I am very disappointed in them and I urge that the law takes its course”, she added.
Madam Affo-Toffey said even those who have stolen or embezzled huge sums of funds belonging to the state would not be treated the way they did to the 12-year-old boy.
The MP called for more education for Ghanaians on the issue of child abuse in the country.
“We as MPs and the Gender Ministry must get involved to educate parents on why children should not be tortured. Punishment for a child can take so many diverse ways without torture”.
The suspects are expected to appear before the court today.
