Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has sided with the views calling for a review of Ghana’s retirement age currently set at 60 years.
According to the Minister-designate, there have been calls for the review of the age with some calling for 65 years whilst others are opting for 70.
However, Dr. Pelpuo, appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament Thursday, January 30, 2025, said any adjustments that come should tally with the country’s economic capacity and overall preparedness.
He disclosed the need to have a broader national consensus before making such significant policy change, reemphasising the significance of inclusive dialogue in shaping Ghana’s future workforce.
“There’s a lot of talk about increasing the retirement age now, some say up to 65 years, some say up to 70 years, but they are still strong why should they retire? I think it should come as a result of a harmonious decision. We will need to reconsider or consider whether it’s time for us to do it or not.
“I will go along the many who will pose a view that there’s a need for a review, given our economy and our capacity to deal with it,” he shared.
I’ll advocate for completion of Agenda 111 to clear backlog of health workers – Pelpuo
