The Electoral Commission (EC) has hinted of extending the deadline for the ongoing limited voter registration exercise due to the challenges being recorded nationwide.

It says it will carry out the extension should there be backlog of voters at the end of the 21-day period scheduled for the registration.

The EC, due to network failure Wednesday, leading to many people not being able to register, directed its officers to switch to the offline mode effective Thursday, May 09, 2024.

A statement from the Commission dated Wednesday, May 08, 2024, and signed by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu, relayed the EC’s apologies to the public for the inconvenience caused during the challenges.

“The Commission wishes to inform all its stakeholders and the General Public that some challenges were experienced with the network this afternoon, affecting the Online mode of registration. The Commission has directed its District Officers to switch to the Offline mode of registration beginning tomorrow, the 9th of May, 2024.

“The Commission apologises for the delays experienced this afternoon.

“The Commission assures its stakeholders that should there be a backlog of voters at the end of the twenty-one (21) day process, the registration exercise will be extended beyond the 27th of May, 2024 deadline,” the statement noted.

Meanwhile, running mate of the National Democratic Congress, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, had earlier admonished the Commission to make room for deadline extension due to the delays caused by the hitches.
