Member of Parliament for the Effutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the “voter apathy in the just-ended election shows that Ghanaians don’t trust the NPP and NDC.”
He says both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have lost the trust reposed in them by Ghanaians.
The Saturday, December 07, 2024 polls which elected a president and 276 parliamentarians saw a low voter turnout with less than two-third of the total registered voters exercising their franchise.
This, the Majority Leader of Parliament, in an exclusive interview on 3FM Sunrise with Johnny Hughes, says affected the NPP’s chances of breaking the eighth cycle of change of government.
He, however, argued that “I’m not a prophet of doom nor a seer sayer, but NDC will suffer voter apathy in the 2028 general elections” if it fails to fulfill its mandate of serving the people.
The Effutu lawmaker indicated that “no political party can claim a particular region or constituency as their stronghold without working.”
The just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections showed a shift in the political landscape as the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) engaged in a fierce contest.
The results indicate significant regional gains and losses for both parties compared to the 2020 elections. While the NPP faced major declines across its traditional strongholds and battleground regions, the NDC saw modest overall gains with critical improvements in specific regions.
