John Dramani Mahama, flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has cautioned the President that it is not in his power to determine whom he hands over power to, since it is God that chooses a leader.
His comments is in reaction to President Akufo-Addo’s statement that he is not going to hand over power to John Dramani Mahama whom he has defeated in an election before.
The President, William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during a visit to Nandom in the Upper West region reiterated that he cannot hand over Ghana to a man he has defeated twice at the polls, a statement he had made earlier, as well as Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture.
The comments, which many have criticised since, for its potential to breed chaos, has been condemned by the former President, John Dramani Mahama.
According to him, the President should know it is not man who decides who becomes a leader but something God himself chooses.
Speaking at the Gonjaland Youth Congress in Damongo where he also cut sod for the construction of a multi-purpose Jakpa Palace for the Yagbonwura, John Mahama pledged his commitment as leader of the biggest opposition party that they will ensure Ghana experiences a free and fair election in December.
“I wish to urge our President that the best legacy he can leave this country is to superintend over a peaceful and credible election. I wish to remind you that it is God who makes rulers and he can never ever be the one to choose his successor. It is God who will choose a successor. I can assure you all that as leader of the biggest minority party in this country that we shall do our best to ensure peaceful elections in this country,” he assured.
The NDC flag bearer also admonished the Minerals Commission of granting mining concessions in Gonjaland to people without consulting the chiefs and people of the area.
“I have received several complaints from the chiefs and the youth associations in our area that no stakeholder consultations had been held with traditional leaders and the youth in the process of awarding these mining concessions. I therefore urge the Minerals Commissions should broaden stakeholder consultation to ensure that any mining that takes place there is done in a peaceful manner without any confusion,” he advised.
