President John Dramani Mahama began his engagements on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly with a meeting in New York on Sunday, September 20, 2026, with Alex Soros, Chairman of the Open Society Foundations (OSF).
Soros is an American investor and philanthropist who chairs the Open Society Foundations, the philanthropic network founded by his father, billionaire George Soros.
He took over leadership of the $25 billion foundation in 2023 and has since led its work supporting civil society, governance and development across more than 120 countries.
Soros, who has previously engaged with President Mahama, and his organisation are interested in exploring partnerships and providing support for ECOWAS integration efforts.
Sunday’s meeting was a precursor to a planned presidential roundtable being coordinated by the Foundation with a select group of global foundation presidents and CEOs, including Gates, Ford, OSF, Hewlett Packard, Hilton, Rockefeller, Humanity United, Anglo American, Chandler and UBS Optimus, among others.
