Government has appealed to domestic airlines to reduce airfares to reflect the recent waiver of import duties on aircraft parts.
The appeal comes amid concerns over the high cost of domestic air travel. Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, made the call at the unveiling of Africa World Airlines’ (AWA) new 102-seater Embraer E190 aircraft.
According to him, the waiver is expected to reduce operating costs for domestic carriers and should translate into lower fares for passengers.
“We want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the airlines, especially the leading domestic airlines, to also look at their affairs and let it reflect on the Ghanaian traveller, so that our people can also enjoy some reduction in airfares,” the Minister said.
Nikpe also welcomed the introduction of larger aircraft by AWA, saying increased capacity could encourage more Ghanaians to travel by air and make domestic air travel more accessible.
