Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed the need to empower traditional authorities to play more active role in governance than what the status quo holds.
The presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the role of chiefs in governance is crucial in safeguarding the cultural heritage of Ghana.
If elected President, the NDC flag bearer says he will establish a more cordial relationship with the traditional authority as custodians of Ghana’s traditions to champion the nation’s development.
“I have always believed empowering traditional leaders to take a more active role in governance can create a more inclusive and effective system honouring our cultural roots.
“I am committed to enhancing relations with our chiefs as we move forward. They are not only custodians of our traditions but also key stakeholders in our development agenda,” John Mahama said in a Facebook post Friday, November 29, 2024, whilst talking about his encounter with the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, and his entourage at his palace in Accra Thursday, November 28.
In his comments, Mahama said partnering with the chiefs will also provide “opportunities to promote cultural tourism, boost local economies, and showcase our heritage to the world.”
These, he noted, could be attained by making Ghanaian festivals visible to the world for the benefit of both the State and local communities.
