Solomon Owusu, the Director of Communications for the United Party (UP), has endorsed President Mahama’s swift assent to the report that recommended the removal of the former Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
Owusu has described the President’s action as straightforward and expected.
Speaking on TV3’s BigIssue segment of the NewDay morning show on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, he stated that President Mahama’s decision to sign the report was the easiest thing to do per what was contained in Article 146.
“One of the beautiful things John Mahama did was to make sure that when the committee recommended for the removal of the Chief Justice, quickly he signed. It must not be difficult,” he stated.
The UP Communications Director was responding to Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a University of Ghana Political Science lecturer, who on one breath had argued that the 1992 Constitution had served Ghana well, questioning the need for a review.
Owusu countered that if the Constitution was as effective as Zaato claimed, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), of which Zaato is a member, wouldn’t have had issues with the provisions guiding the Chief Justice’s removal, which President Mahama duly followed.
He reiterated that the NPP has nothing beneficial to offer Ghana, a stance he said they will highlight to prevent Ghanaians from listening to them.
“We’ll continue to remind the people of this country, as to why nobody must listen to the NPP and any of their charade because they don’t mean well for the people of this country,” he stated.
He emphasised that every Ghanaian have a duty to ensure the government of the day becomes successful, citing the Akufo-Addo administration’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) as an example of poor governance affecting everyone.
“It’s our constitutional responsibility to ensure this administration succeeds, and for this administration to succeed is to praise them when it is due and to criticise them when it is due – it’s constructive feedback.”
He added that: “When Akufo-Addo and Bawumia mismanaged the economy, leading to DDEP, did they spare UP or NDC members? Everyone suffered. Even as a ruling party member, if something’s wrong, you must speak out to save your party and country,” he stated.
