A distinguished gathering of alumni, dignitaries, and guests marked the official launch of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Mfantsipim School, one of Ghana’s most prestigious educational institutions.
Delivering an address on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Chairman of the anniversary launch, Nana Brew Butler paid tribute to the enduring legacy of the school, describing it as a cornerstone in shaping the nation’s intellectual and leadership heritage.
He emphasized that the theme of the anniversary, “Shaping Ghana’s Greatest Minds,” reflects not just an aspiration but a proven historical reality. For over 150 years, Mfantsipim has produced generations of leaders, professionals, and public servants who have contributed significantly to national development.
He highlighted the presence of the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the event as a testament to the institution’s national importance. It also noted her recent recognition by the University of Cape Coast, further underscoring her longstanding commitment to education.
Nana Butler celebrated Mfantsipim’s tradition of excellence, stating that students of the school are trained not only to succeed personally but also to uplift others. He described excellence at the institution as “an inheritance,” passed down through generations.
Paying homage to the school’s founders referred to as the “Faithful Eight” the speech acknowledged their vision and sacrifice in establishing what has become a pillar of secondary education in Ghana.
Historical references were also made to the school’s influence in governance, citing that a significant number of top civil servants in the 1960s were alumni. Additionally, key political figures from Ghana’s past, including leaders from the Second Republic, were noted as products of the institution, demonstrating its cross-partisan impact on national leadership.
The event brought together distinguished alumni, often referred to as “old boys,” alongside educators, students, and invited guests, all united in celebrating the school’s legacy and future.
As the anniversary activities begin, Mfantsipim School is expected to host a series of events aimed at reinforcing its role in nurturing future generations while honoring its rich history.
