The Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) has cut sod for the construction of an eight-lane tartan track, which will be of international athletics federation standard.
The project is the third phase of a five-year development plan earmarked by MOBA to build the Kwabotwe Center for Sports Excellence targeted at improving sports development in the Mfantsipim School and the Cape Coast metropolis as well.
Addressing a short ceremony at the event, the Chairman of the sponsoring year groups (SYG) Eric Yankah said MOBA remained committed to executing the five-year development plan and the construction of the 8-lane tartan track was the third phase after the construction of a GH¢1.2 million basketball court completed in 2020 and and a $1.6 million FIFA standard astroturf also completed in 2021.
He was optimistic the tartan tracks would be completed by November this year when Mfantsipim will be celebrating its anniversary and have its speech and prize giving day.
He also revealed that as part of the project for this year, the ’62, ’72, ’82, ’92 and 2002 year groups are going to sponsor the construction of 160,000 liters water project to improve the water situation in the whole school.
“We cannot do athletic tracks and leave out the most important need of the school. We want to double the already 80,000 liters to the already existing 80,000 making it 160,000 liters to ensure uninterrupted water flow in the school.”
Headmaster Rev Ebenezer Kobina Aidoo lauded MOBA for their continual support to the school and noted that giving back to the school was a major intervention that had sustained and improved the standard of Mfantsipim.
With excitement, he said: “We are gradually nearing having a sports complex which will be next to none in the country and possibly in Africa. Kwabotwe will have something to be proud of.”
He also expressed gratitude to MOBA for the water improvement project which will help address water challenge in the school.
“Solving the challenge of water shortage in this school means a lot to me because it will reduce the struggle of students and staff,” he stated.
Rev Aidoo also pledged commitment of the management of the school to MOBA in making Mfantsipim great.
The event was also used to award some students with cash prizes after excelling in an essay competition that was about how to improve Mfantsipim to make it a global dream institution.
