A 29-year-old man who posed as a military officer has been arrested in Bolgatanga for allegedly defrauding individuals with the promise of recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces.
The suspect, identified as Jeffery Solomon Darko, was apprehended by operatives from the 11 Mechanised Battalion at approximately 2:00pm on April 16.
Acting on intelligence, the operatives moved swiftly to arrest Darko after he allegedly attempted to recruit one of his victims (name withheld) under false pretenses.
According to reports, the suspect claimed to be a Warrant Officer Class One from the 3rd Infantry Battalion.
He is said to have demanded a payment of 150 US dollars or its cedi equivalent to “facilitate” the recruitment process. His victim (name withheld) reportedly paid GHC1,000 to the suspect.
Upon his arrest, Darko was found in possession of two smartphones and the GHC1,000 he had allegedly received from the victim. He has since been handed over to the Bolgatanga District Police, along with the seized items, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Ghana Armed Forces continues to caution the public against dealing with individuals who promise military recruitment outside of officially sanctioned channels.
Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest military or police authority.
