The Minority in Parliament has kicked against the Energy Minister’s shake-up in the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti region, saying the move was politically motivated.

The Minority says the leadership changes was caused as a result of a comment made by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Nana Kwasi Andrews, that the managers of the ECG in the Ashanti region are sabotaging the government by causing the outages.

The shake-up was announced in a post by the Minister of Government Communicati ons, Felix Kwakye Ofosu in a Facebook post on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Speaking to the media in Parliament on Monday, April 27, 2026, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, said politicising an issue as crucial as electricity supply is not the way to go.

“Chairman of the NDC in Ashanti region two weeks ago gave an instruction to the Minister of Energy to reshuffle the managers in ECG in Kumasi with the notion that he feels that they are sabotaging the system. That is where I have a challenge,” he stated.

According to him, “if we politicise the issue, then it becomes a challenge,” he noted, adding that such changes should come on a technical background rather than from a political lense.

“If it’s on pure technical ground, I don’t think anybody would have an issue with it. It is not out of the norm to have a CEO to step aside for an investigation to be carried out in order not to have the CEO not to interfere in the whole process. What is out of the norm is the rhetoric from other government communicators that he was appointed during the erstwhile government and so he is a saboteur and he’s sabotaging the system,” he stated.

Meanwhile, governance and leadership expert, Professor Enoch Opoku Antwi, has warned the government to seek immediate redress for the issue, as it could have dire consequences on the administration if not addressed.
