A 33-year-old Mobile Money vendor, Christopher Ahordo, also known as Colombo, has been shot dead by unidentified armed robbers at Gbagblakope, a suburb of Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Monday, at the victim’s shop located along the Diamond Cement Road. According to eyewitnesses, Ahordo was preparing to close for the day when two masked men dressed in long robes emerged from a nearby bush.
The assailants reportedly began shooting into the air to disperse bystanders before firing directly at the vendor, striking him in the left side of his chest. They then fled the scene with a bag believed to contain an unspecified amount of money.
Residents rushed the victim to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue as police investigations commence.
While armed robbery attacks on Mobile Money vendors are relatively rare in the Volta Region, this marks the second such fatal incident on the Diamond Cement Road since 2017.
In a similar case in June 2023, another MoMo vendor was murdered in Akatsi while returning home from work. His motorbike, mobile phone, SIM cards, and an undisclosed sum of money were stolen by unknown attackers.
The latest killing has raised fresh concerns among residents and stakeholders over the safety of Mobile Money operators in the region. Many are calling for increased police presence and security measures to protect these essential financial service providers.
