A netizen’s response to FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, seems to settle the debate on whether Ghana has the financial muscles to build another stadium after the legendary Pele or rename one of its existing one’s after him.

The FIFA Boss had said at the wake keeping ceremony of the legend in Sao Paolo, Brazil, that the Association was going to ask all nations to name a stadium after the man considered to be the greatest ever to have kicked football on planet earth.

Having won a record three world cups and scoring over 1,200 goals for both clubs and country, Pele is considered the greatest of all time (GOAT) in the game despite some arguing the likes of Diego Maradonna, Lionel Messi, Alfredo de Stefano, Johan Cryff and Cristiano Ronaldo amongst others as better or at par with him.

The FIFA boss had noted “we’re going to ask every country in the world to name one of their football stadiums with the name of Pele.”

Infantino told journalists at the Vila Belmiro, the stadium where the player known as “The King” first exploded onto the world stage with his exploits for his longtime club, Santos FC.

Reacting to the story on social media, an Onua TV top fan, Kwame Fasta thinks Ghana is already spending a lot on the controversial National Cathedral amid the economic crisis and doesn’t think there would be enough funds to build another stadium for the legend now.

Rather, naming the National Cathedral after Pele will settle everything despite the edifice’s purpose being incongruous with anything sport, less to talk of football.

“Gh won’t be [able to build] a stadium. So it will be Le Cathedral de Pele,” Kwame had commented.

President Akufo-Addo had promised during his reelection campaign to build a cathedral for God which has generated series of controversies after spending almost GH₵400 million on the project without progress beyond the foundation stage.

Many who have criticised the government are of the view that the project shouldn’t be built with state funds as it was a personal pledge by the President who assured the public of executing the building with private donations.
