Debutants Basake Holy Stars FC have clinched a vital 1-0 victory over former champions Hearts of Oak on the first day of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League.

An early strike by Prince Tweneboa at the Accra Sports Stadium was the separator in Sunday’s game.

Hearts of Oak have beefed up their squad in preseason and had gone on camping in neighbouring Togo in an attempt to mount a strong challenge for the title, won by FC Samartex 1996 last season.

But Aboubacar Ouattara’s boys could not give him what he hoped for as they lost not only their first game but a first home game.

Incidentally, the Phobians have lost their first matches in the domestic league since the 2020/21 season.

The Phobians had battled relegation in the past two seasons.

According to management, the target of not getting into a similar situation is what has been given the playing body.

Hearts of Oak will travel to Kpando to face Heart of Lions in their next game on Friday, September 13.

Today’s winners, Basake Holy Stars FC, will go back home to welcome Dreams FC, who drew goalless in their opening match.
