The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Bono Regional Office, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) and accelerating the region’s progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Speaking at the 2026 Second Quarter Performance Review Meeting with the 11 districts of the Bono Region, Regional Director of the NHIA, Isaac Badu Amponsah, said the Authority is intensifying efforts to expand health insurance coverage and ensure that more residents benefit from accessible and affordable primary healthcare services.
The meeting, held under the theme “Advancing Free Primary Health Care (FPHC), Accelerating Bono Region’s Journey to Universal Health Coverage (UHC),” brought together the Regional Minister, NHIA Unit Heads, District Managers, District Focal Persons, Public Relations Officers, District Accountants and other stakeholders to assess performance and develop strategies for improving service delivery.

Mr. Amponsah disclosed that at the end of the second quarter of 2026, the Bono Region recorded 941,317 active NHIS members, representing 69% population coverage out of a projected population of 1,372,986.
He, however, noted that the region had recorded significant progress within less than two months, with active membership increasing to 1,011,034, representing 73.64% population coverage as of the day of the meeting.
According to him, the Authority has set an ambitious but achievable target of 84% population coverage by the end of 2026, stressing that the target could be attained through stronger collaboration, innovation and renewed commitment from all stakeholders.
He therefore urged District Managers and their teams, particularly districts that were lagging behind, to intensify community durbars and other grassroots mobilisation activities to increase enrolment.
Mr. Amponsah also called for stronger collaboration with the Social Welfare Department to identify and register indigent persons who may otherwise face barriers to accessing healthcare.
He further urged District Accountants to maintain prudent financial management practices while encouraging Public Relations Officers to intensify public education on NHIS registration, renewal and the benefits of Free Primary Health Care.
The Regional Director described the remaining months of the year as an opportunity for the NHIA and its partners to strengthen their collective efforts towards achieving broader health insurance coverage and improving access to quality healthcare across the Bono Region.
He expressed confidence that with sustained commitment and effective collaboration, the region would make significant strides towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.
Speaking as the guest of honour at the meeting the Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa Esq., called for stronger collaboration among health sector stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare initiative in the Bono Region.
He also urged stakeholders to strengthen primary healthcare facilities, intensify public education and uphold professionalism, efficiency and accountability in healthcare delivery.
Hon. Akwaboa further urged stakeholders to use the review to identify gaps and develop practical measures to improve healthcare delivery, stressing that a healthy population is essential to the socioeconomic development of the Bono Region.
