The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Malian Eric Sekou Chelle as Head Coach of the Super Eagles.
This follows the adoption of a recommendation by the Executive Committee of the NFF at a meeting said to have been held on Thursday, January 2.
The Committee is said to have recommended the appointment of Chelle, who guided Mali to the quarter finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where Nigeria won Silver.
His appointment takes immediate effect, according to sources close to the NFF.
Chelle was sacked by the Federation of Malian Football (FEMAFOOT) following a poor start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
After a 3-1 win in their first qualifier at home against Chad, the Eagles dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Central African Republic and lost 1-2 at home to Ghana. They then drew goalless against Madagascar in the next game.
The former defender is expected to revive hopes of the Super Eagles, who have also struggled in the qualifiers for the USA, Canada & Mexico World Cup.
They lie fifth in Group C, having gone winless so far.
Chelle is expected to guide the three-time African champions in the next couple of qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
