The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has reiterated its call to the public to stay away from overturned tankers at accident scenes.
The authority said that even the smallest spark can trigger a devastating explosion, leading to serious injuries, loss of lives, and extensive property damage.
“Your safety is priceless! Call trained professionals such as the Ghana National Fire Service on 192 or Ghana Police Service on 191 to handle the scene or reach out to the National Petroleum Authority’s contact center on: 0302550380,” the NPA wrote on its Facebook page.
Earlier, the CEO of the NPA Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, said that the authority was liaising with the Police to ensure that all persons involved in fuel theft during accidents involving tankers are arrested and prosecuted.
He stated that it is illegal to steal fuel even when tankers are involved in accidents.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Thursday, March 19, on the sidelines of the World Consumer Rights Day 2026 event, he said the Authority has videos of individuals stealing fuel from accident scenes.
He added that the videos have been presented to the Police and the Cybercrime Office for further action.
“This has resulted in massive explosions, leading to the loss of lives. We are working with the Police to effect the arrest of all those found to have been stealing from the tankers involved in accidents. Anytime there is an accident involving a tanker, nobody should get involved,” he said.
