Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba has said it does not augur well for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to take the lead in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race with 44%, as the Global InfoAnalytics poll suggests.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia who he says is the front runner among the aspirants should be leading with 50% and above, not 44%.
The latest poll by Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwa puts Dr. Bawumia in the lead with 44% with a 3% drop from the previous poll. In September the same poll put the former Vice President ahead of the other aspirants with 47%.
In a social media post on Friday, October 24, Global InfoAnalytics said Bryan Acheampong and Kennedy Agyapong gained 2% each in the October poll, pushing them to 5% and 19% respectively.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s The Key Points, Saturday, October 25, Mr. Amaliba noted that Dr. Bawumia who once had the full support of his government in power and regarded as the front runner is “now struggling”, noting it is not a good indication for Bawumia.
“Look at the man’s campaign last time, he was the favourite of the establishment. Today, there is no establishment behind him and he is struggling with 44%. If you are front runner, all those who are front runners, they make above 50% so if you have a 44% today, it is not good for Dr. Bawumia.
“Now, look at 15% undecided and 15% undisclosed. Normally, these people if they make up their mind will not go to the front runner. So, the front runner who is at 44% now which is Dr. Bawumia is a bad testament for him,” he stated.
He argued that Dr. Bawumia’s current lead with 44% is a clear indication that he could not have won the previous flagbearer race without the support from his government in power at the time.
“Somebody who had the backing of the establishment in the last election and should now be doing 44% is a clear indication that but for the establishment the last time, he couldn’t have even won the elections.
“He had the support of the establishment the last time, this time, he is doing 44% without the establishment and you think that it is good? It is not good,” he added.
