The Nzema East Municipal Assembly (NEMA) in the Western Region has been selected as one of 300 cities worldwide to join the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund, a global initiative aimed at empowering young people to lead climate solutions in their communities.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Nzema East, Herbert Kuah Dickson, who announced the development described the initiative as a major opportunity for the municipality to position young people at the centre of climate leadership, innovation, and community resilience.
Under the programme, NEMA will receive funding and technical support to mobilize young residents between the ages of 15 and 24 to design and implement climate-related projects aligned with the municipality’s development priorities.
As part of the initiative, the Assembly will launch innovation competitions to invite climate action ideas from young people.
Selected proposals will receive support from a funding package of up to $40,000, alongside technical guidance from Bloomberg Philanthropies to help with implementation.
The projects are expected to focus on creating public spaces, strengthening local infrastructure, mitigating disasters, and improving community resilience against climate change.
The MCE said the programme goes beyond financial support as it represents a chance to empower the youth to drive meaningful development within the municipality.
“For us, this funding is more than a grant. It is an opportunity to place young people at the centre of local climate leadership, innovation, and community resilience,” he stated.
He added that municipalities that quickly and effectively implement their first phase of projects could receive an additional $50,000 to expand youth participation and support more initiatives.
Chief Executive Officer of Bloomberg Philanthropies, Patricia E. Harris, said the initiative is helping local governments around the world partner with young people to tackle climate challenges while strengthening trust between citizens and city authorities.
The Nzema East Municipal Assembly is expected to officially open applications for youth-led climate projects in late June 2026 through its online platform.
Young people within the municipality have been urged to participate and submit innovative ideas that can contribute to environmental sustainability and community development.
