The Assemblyman for the Ofankor South electoral area, Dennis Daniel Quarshie, has given an eyewitness account of how the Ofankor Barrier multiple collision occurred.
The crash has so far claimed 11 lives and left several others injured. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Ofankor Barrier, on the overpass off the main road, causing severe traffic and a diversion along the route.
ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had earlier confirmed 10 fatalities to TV3 on the NewDay morning show, with 7 others unconscious.
King Nartey had also indicated that one survivor, a girl below 15 years, has had both of her legs severely severed.
Narrating how the incident occurred from an eyewitness account, the Assemblyman, Quarshie, told TV3’s Roland Walker at the accident scene, the whole thing started after a tricycle rider, popularly known as ‘aboboyaa’, was knocked down by a tipper truck.
He said the driver of the truck sped off after knocking down the rider, causing a police officer who was also driving along the route to stop and direct oncoming vehicles.
While at it, other trucks who were unaware of the situation on the road crashed into the scene, with about three more cars also crashing into the pileup to worsen the situation.
“I met one of the eyewitness, so he narrated the story to me, he told me that there’s an aboboyaa which was knocked down by an articulated (long truck) driver, so the driver did not stop and went away. So the aboboyaa driver died on the spot. So the police man came and met the dead body, so he parked and started stopping the cars to direct the traffic.
“So, when he parked, there’s another triple truck behind him, he did not know what is happening, so when he saw the policeman stop him, he stopped, then there was another passenger car behind, he did not know the tipper truck had parked, so he came and hit the truck.
“Then there’s another third car, who did not know that there’s an accident, so he also came and hit the passenger car, so the passenger car got wrapped in the middle, in the passenger car, that is where the passengers were, about 15 passengers were in that van.
“So I can tell, you, almost all lives gone in that very van, because it was in the middle, so it was a total crash, and there’s another fourth passenger car who did not even see, so he also came and hit, and about two people died in that car too,” he narrated.
Meanwhile, the GNFS has now cleared the road to allow free flow of traffic on the stretch.
