A former Member of Parliament for North Dayi, Akua Sena Dansua, has condemned the trajectory of questions that come up during the vetting of ministerial nominees.
Rather than highlighting on areas which she says do not have any bearing on the specific portfolios where nominees are being scrutinised, the former lawmaker wants members on the committee to ask questions that bother on the respective offices.
According to the former Minister of Youth and Sports, some of the persons asking those unrelated questions have more to hide, and would be more disastrous if such persons were to be probed.
“If we are to go into the personal lives of some of the persons asking the questions, only God knows what we’ll uncover,” she exclusively told TV3’s George Kwaning in Parliament Friday, January 31, 2025, ahead of the vetting of the Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Her comments follow the three-hour questioning of the Minister-designate for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, by Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and Ranking Member on the Appointments Committee when he appeared before the Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Some political analysts have attributed the chaos that marred Thursday’s vetting to the unfettered leeway granted the Minority Leader by the Chairman of the Committee to hold the nominee for three hours.
He has therefore suggested that a cap be given to each nominee that appears before the Committee.
