The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has urged the government to treat the growing unemployment challenge with greater urgency, warning that the situation is becoming increasingly concerning.
Speaking in Parliament on June 12, the Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee stressed that Ghanaian youth are not interested in political rhetoric but are seeking practical and sustainable employment opportunities.
According to Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, young people want well-designed programmes that can create dignified, sustainable, and well-paying jobs rather than promises and slogans.
He noted that addressing youth unemployment requires deliberate policy interventions backed by measurable outcomes and long-term planning.
As part of his proposals to tackle the challenge, the Ofoase-Ayirebi legislator called for the establishment of a credible labour market information system to provide accurate data on employment trends and workforce needs.
He also advocated for a clear distinction between skills development and job creation programmes, arguing that both require targeted strategies to achieve meaningful results.
Additionally, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah urged the government to anchor employment initiatives on clear performance indicators, including the number of beneficiaries, job retention rates, and the long-term impact of such programmes.
He emphasized that effective monitoring and accountability are essential to ensuring that employment interventions deliver tangible benefits to Ghana’s youth and contribute to national development.
