Contrary to the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) disappointment in former Black Stars Coach, Nana Otto Addo, legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, believes he was on the right path.

According to him, building a better team to produce results come with time, saying the coach began a project which he asserts would have yielded fruits in the foreseeable future.

Brako-Powers, speaking on the BigIssue segment on the NewDay morning show on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, noted that Ghana’s golden generation that reached the quarter finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was built over time.

He questioned whether Ghanaians are expecting to win the World Cup, the reason for which they’ve sacked the head coach, attributing some of such decisions to pressures beyond the football corridors.

The lawyer further indicated that such decisions, including pressures from both the political and football class to coaches, do not help in bringing out the best in the players.

“I always ask myself, are we thinking of winning the world cup? Is that the understanding? That shouldn’t be the motive. He has to build a project. It took the Essiens, Appiahs and the others some time to be able to find their rhythm.

“I felt Otto Addo was on the right path because sometimes I feel the pressures behind the scene tend to overpower the real work. The GFA and sometimes political pressures.

“These are things I feel they are not doing well to help the players to discharge their service to the satisfaction of Ghanaians,” he stated.

The GFA’s sacking of the former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach follows Ghana’s defeats in two of their pre–World Cup friendly matches against Austria and Germany in March.

In a statement confirming the decision, the Ghana FA said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

Otto Addo’s departure marks another significant change in the technical setup of the national team as Ghana continues its preparations ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.
