Forensic scientists from the Ghana National Fire Service have begun investigations into the cause of fire at the job 600 building within the premises of Parliament.

All activities in the building that serves as the administrative wing, thus houses offices of the parliamentarians were brought to a halt, because of the fire outbreak, which started from the storeroom for archive materials.

The Government Assurance Committee was meeting with the Works and Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, when the fire started.

The outbreak occurred around 9:45am, compelling staff and Members of Parliament to rush out of their offices to the open space between the administration block and the Job 600.

It took three tenders and firemen about an hour and a half to douse the fire.

The Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Fire Service, ACFO 1 Roberta Aggrey Ghanson told journalists that they had managed to bring the fire under control and investigations will commence into the incident to identify the cause.

“Initially, we saw a smoke and thought that was the source, so we are doing everything possible to contain the fire to prevent further spread to other parts. We will immediately begin investigations into the cause, when we finish with containing it”, she added.

Chief Fire Officer Julius A. Kuunuor assured that the faulty fire tender located on the premises of Parliament will be fixed by close of week, to help prevent escalation of such accidents

He added that the closeness of other fire stations to Parliament contributed to the swift response.

“We have other fire stations around, and so that helped us in fighting the fire swiftly, we know that the fire tender here is faulty, but we are giving the strongest indication that it will be fixed by close of week”, he assured.

Business in the legislative house was postponed and parliamentary staff were given the day off.
