The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports is set to invite the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Minister responsible for Sports to explain the recent performances of the Black Stars.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Hon. Ernest Henry Norgbey, disclosed this exclusively to Akoma 87.9 FM following Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium.
According to Hon. Norgbey, the committee is yet to investigate the Black Stars’ recent performances but intends to engage the GFA and the Sports Minister to establish what is happening with Ghana football.
“We as a committee are yet to investigate into the performance of the Black Stars of recent times. We plan to invite the GFA, the Minister, purposely and specifically to interrogate what actually is happening to Ghana football, especially when it comes to the Black Stars,” he told Akoma 87.9 FM.
Hon. Norgbey also raised the possibility of a major restructuring of Ghana football, saying he would not be surprised if government eventually considers dissolving the GFA and starting afresh.
He referenced developments in Nigeria while stressing the need for greater investment in Ghana’s sporting sector.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the government steps in and says, ‘We are dissolving the GFA and starting afresh,’ because we have seen something similar happen in Nigeria. We need to invest more in our sporting activities.”
However, the Sports Committee Chairman clarified that he was not making a call for the dissolution of the GFA at this stage, saying the committee first needs to understand what is happening within the Black Stars camp.
“If we are banned for two years, those two years could be used to rebuild and restructure the system, but it is not a call I will make at this moment until I get the understanding of what exactly is happening in camp.”
The comments come after Ghana suffered a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in Accra, leaving fresh questions over the Black Stars’ performance and the broader administration of Ghana football.
The Parliamentary Sports Committee’s planned engagement with the GFA and the Sports Minister is expected to focus on understanding the factors behind the team’s recent struggles and the wider state of Ghana football.
