A former Chairman of the National Peace Council, Professor Emmanuel Asante, has asserted that peace is a by-product of justice, urging stakeholders in conflict resolution to work towards the both.
He has admonished them to ensure that peace and justice prevails in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, during and after the exercise.
According to him, talking about peace without justice produces vengeance.
Speaking with Akoma News Monday, September 23, 2024, the former Chair of the National Peace Council said seeking justice without peace is revenge adding that both justice and peace must be addressed simultaneously in order to achieve absolute peace.
“No one can talk about peace without justice. Peace is embedded in justice and you cannot talk about justice without peace so whoever talks about peace is also talking about justice because we get peace from justice. If someone flouts the laws, the person must be dealt with to bring peace.
“Justice for the sake of justice without aiming at peace is vengeance. Seeking retribution for someone is not justice. Justice is when one is punished for committing an offence so there will be peace. We must use the same energy being used to push for peace to push for justice because justice without peace is vengeance and peace without justice is pure sham,” he said during the Ashanti Regional National Peace Council’s Peace Symposium to commemorate World Peace Day.
