The Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police (SOA), in collaboration with the National SWAT team, has arrested 64 suspects for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition during a raid at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7 in the Greater Accra Region.
Operation Triggered by Resident Complaints
The security operation was launched following complaints from local residents regarding suspected criminal activities at the lounge and its surrounding areas, which included reports of the open display and possible trade in firearms.
During the swoop, law enforcement officers identified a blue, unregistered Acura vehicle containing a pistol holster. Because no one at the scene claimed ownership of the item, the vehicle was impounded and transferred to the Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Impersonator and Major Cache Discovered
Among those apprehended was a suspect named Theophilus Ashon, who falsely claimed to be a police officer attached to CID Operations. Subsequent checks established that he had no affiliation with the service, and a search of his person led to the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Further intelligence and investigations led the police to a location in Atico, where another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, was taken into custody. A search executed at Mills' residence uncovered a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition, including three pump-action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges, 54 rounds of 40-calibre ammunition, and other exhibits.
Police confirmed that all 64 suspects are currently in custody assisting with ongoing investigations and will be put before the court.
