The Ghana Police Service has foiled a planned robbery attack along the Ejura–Nkoranza highway following an intelligence-led operation in the Ashanti Region.

According to a police statement, the operation took place on April 9, 2026, near Mimenaso No. 2, where a six-member gang had allegedly positioned itself in a nearby bush with the intention of ambushing and robbing commuters.

Police said the suspects, believed to be led by one Mahamadu Fuseini, also known as Shaini, opened fire upon spotting the approaching officers, reportedly mistaking them for potential victims.

The police team returned fire, resulting in one suspect being fatally shot, while the others, including the alleged leader, managed to flee the scene.

A search conducted after the exchange led to the retrieval of a pump-action gun loaded with four live cartridges, two spent cartridges, and three mobile phones.

Officers also found two additional live cartridges and a talisman on the deceased suspect.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Atebubu Government Hospital morgue pending autopsy, while police say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining members of the gang.

The Police Service has reiterated its commitment to combating armed robbery and ensuring the safety of commuters along major highways across the country.
