In a major operation by the Accra Regional Police Command, a Hyundai Hiace vehicle, fraudulently disguised as an ambulance, was intercepted at Labadi on Tuesday, September 10, 2025, carrying large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.
The vehicle, bearing registration number GX 277-20, was intercepted in front of the Jamboree Drinking Spot following sustained police surveillance.
Upon inspection, law enforcement officers discovered 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of dried leaves concealed in sacks inside the van.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the illegal consignment was transported from Kpando in the Volta North Region to Accra for onward distribution.

Addressing the media, the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, confirmed that the vehicle was originally purchased by the suspect as a regular commercial van.

It was later modified with ambulance markings and a siren, ostensibly to avoid suspicion and evade routine police checks when in use.
“The suspect deliberately converted the van into what appeared to be a legitimate ambulance, taking advantage of the trust and freedom typically afforded to emergency vehicles,” Supt. Obeng stated.

The suspect is currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities are working to determine the full extent of the distribution network and any accomplices involved in the trafficking operation.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity involving emergency or service vehicles being used for non-designated purposes.
This interception forms part of the Ghana Police Service’s broader strategy to clamp down on drug trafficking networks operating across regional lines under the guise of legitimate services.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to be formally charged after the completion of preliminary inquiries.
