The Homicide Unit of the Ghana Police Service is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Ransford Owusu, a 16-year-old junior footballer from the Siano Soccer Academy in Accra.

The investigation follows allegations that Owusu was sexually abused by his coach.

Preliminary investigations began after Ransford Owusu’s death in February 2025. Owusu’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, reported to the Amasaman Police that her son, a junior footballer, had fallen ill and died on February 28, 2025. Ms. Asantewaa informed the police that prior to his passing, Ransford had confided in her that his coach, Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually abused him.

The case was subsequently transferred to the Homicide Unit at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters. On November 4, 2025, the suspect, Anyass Ibrahim, was arrested to assist with the investigation. He was interrogated, his statement was taken, and he was later granted bail, with instructions to report to the CID Headquarters.

Efforts to Obtain Medical Records

The Police have reviewed medical reports submitted by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (Children’s Hospital), both in Kumasi. These reports suggest that Owusu was treated for liver and kidney related conditions.

To confirm the deceased’s medical history, the Police are trying to obtain the full medical reports from both hospitals, as Ransford received medical care at both facilities before his demise. Because earlier formal requests for the reports were declined, the Police have secured a court order to be served on both hospitals.

Investigation Extended Following Viral Video

The investigation has been extended following the emergence of a viral video involving suspect Ibrahim and a minor in a compromising situation.

The Ghana Police Service is urging any person with credible information that could assist the investigation to contact the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or the nearest Police Station.

The press release was signed by Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Director-General, Public Affairs.
