The Ghana Prisons Service has launched the “Think Prisons 360 Degrees Initiative”, a comprehensive plan to modernize and reposition the Service as a world-class, human, and development-oriented institution.
The initiative is anchored on five strategic pillars: Welfare of Staff and Inmates, Agricultural Mechanization, Industrialization, Business and Wealth Creation, and Strategic Relationships.
The Director-General of Prisons, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, on Thursday, November 6, 2025, launched the programme at the Wa Central Prison alongside the Upper West Regional Minister, as part of her working visit to the Region.

According to the Director-General, the project will include the construction of modern housing units, the upgrading of office facilities, and the expansion of workshops.
“The service also plans to establish a Prisons Infrastructure Development Fund to address maintenance issues and shortfalls in staff residential accommodation”, she added.

She said the initiative aims to enhance the general well-being of staff and inmates, promote agricultural productivity, and foster economic empowerment through industrialisation and business development.
Patience Baffoe-Bonnie. hinted that the Service is exploring partnerships with public and private entities to mobilise resources and galvanise support for the modernisation agenda.
Charles Lwanga Puozuing., Upper West Regional Minister, in his keynote address, said the launch of the policy represents a bold and holistic approach to prison administration, focusing on infrastructure improvements, among others.

“Prisons are not merely places of confinement, they are centres for correction and renewal,” he stated.
The Minister added that “every inmate who passes through the system should emerge better prepared to reintegrate into society as productive and responsible citizens”.

He assured the Service of the RCC’s continues support in all efforts aimed at improving correctional services in the region.
The “Think Prisons 360 Degrees” initiative is expected to transform the Ghana Prisons Service into a model correctional institution, promoting rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration of inmates, while enhancing the welfare of staff.
