Residents of Shed and Asantekrom in the Akontombra District are celebrating the completion of a new health facility and a borehole to provide potable drinking water.

For years, the two communities struggled with limited access to healthcare and clean water. Pregnant women, children, and the elderly often had to travel long distances to seek medical attention, while many households relied on unsafe water sources for their daily needs.

The newly constructed health facility is expected to significantly improve access to basic healthcare services, including maternal care and treatment for common illnesses.

Residents say the facility will reduce travel time, cut transportation costs, and enhance emergency healthcare delivery in the area.
The provision of a borehole is also expected to reduce cases of waterborne diseases and improve sanitation and hygiene in the communities.

Despite their excitement, residents are appealing to the government to ensure that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is fully functional and effective in the area.

According to them, challenges with NHIS registration and renewals often make it difficult for residents to access healthcare services, even when facilities are available.

Meanwhile, the District Health Director has outlined strategies to ensure proper maintenance of the facility.

He emphasized routine inspections, staff supervision, and community involvement as key measures to keep the centre in good condition and guarantee quality healthcare delivery.

Speaking to TV3 News, Mr Joseph Appiah, District Chief Executive reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of the district.

He noted that the projects reflect government’s determination to improve access to essential services, particularly in rural communities, and assured residents that more development initiatives are in the pipeline.

The projects are widely seen as a major step forward in improving living conditions and healthcare delivery in Shed and Asantekrom.
