In a heartfelt tribute posted on X (Formerly Twitter), in memory of the deceased Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, his colleague representing Akuapim North, Samuel Awuku has bemoaned the brevity of life.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP died in the morning of July 7 after a short illness. He was 40 years old.
According to a brother, Edmund Apoh, the late Kumi complained of chest pains and was driven to the hospital by his wife, but the medical personnel could not help much.
“He travelled out of the region and returned this morning. We were told he complained about chest pains, his wife drove him to a private hospital, the health personnel tried all they could to keep him stable, but we lost him. We have lost a great pillar of our family, he was our only hope,” he tearfully narrated in an interview with 3news on July 7.

In honour of the bond they shared, Mr Awuku wrote, “Life is a breath, a moment here, and the next, gone. How fragile this journey is.”
Mr Awuku expressed surprise at the sudden demise of his friend and colleague, “I’m still in shock. Friday, 4th July, 2025 will forever be etched in my memory. Just moments before, the former Vice President, DMB had asked me to check on you and to follow up on the conversation you both had concerning your many legal battles which he wanted an update and to catch up on a few things.
I called, and you said, “I’m on my way to him so bro tell him, which I did… .” You sounded full of life. You even teased me like always…..
“Commander!” Never knew this was a final goodbye call bro.
The Akuapim North MP wondered how life in House will be without Ernest Kumi, “You sit directly behind me in Parliament. Now, turning to watch that empty seat is a sight I will never get used to. That chair held your presence.
It shared our laughter, quiet exchanges, and memories only true colleagues and friends understand. Now I turn, and you will no longer be there to catch up on issues and to share moments. Now, I find myself grasping for words, struggling to accept a truth my heart refuses to hold.
Death has a way of showing up uninvited, tearing through the ordinary with silence and finality. It doesn’t wait for goodbyes. It doesn’t care for schedules or promises.
You were a brother, friend, a fighter and a force. To think that your journey ends here feels cruel and unreal. But maybe that’s the mystery of life, beautiful, unpredictable, and fleeting. Rest well, my Akwatia Star Boy! Your memory lives on in the hearts that carry your light.”
Others, including former President Akufo-Addo also eulogised the late MP.
Paying tribute to the departed soul, ex President Akufo-Addo wrote on X (Formerly Twitter), “I am devastated to learn of the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency. The legislator was adored and loved by party faithful and cherished by all who knew or shared acquaintances with him.
“My deepest sympathies go to his family, the House and the good people of Akwatia Constituency, at this unimaginably difficult time. May he find peaceful rest in the Bosom of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again.”
The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi posted on X, “I struggle to find the words to express the depth of sorrow I felt upon receiving the devastating news of the passing of my colleague and friend, Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Shock and grief have overwhelmed me. I keep whispering, “Ernest… no… this can’t be.” I have lost someone whose friendship, wise counsel, and dedication I deeply cherished.
The news hit me hard. For a moment, I was speechless. My thoughts immediately turned to his family, his friends, and the constituents he served with such passion and integrity. This pain is personal and the loss, truly national.
The Parliamentary chamber will never be the same without him. His voice, his presence, and his tireless commitment to justice and progress left an indelible mark on us all. Ernest, your memory will forever live on in our hearts. We will miss you more than words can express. May your soul rest peacefully.”
On his part, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said, “So full of life. Always with a smile no matter the pressure you are under. A young man with so much promise. A family’s backbone. All gone in a breadth. Help us to number our days, lord. Rest well bruv.”
