The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North region, Dominic Gyasi, has revealed that his administration is endeavouring to establish a sports academy in the area to benefit residents and contribute to national development.

According to him, the academy will help them “harness all the talents in the municipality that are currently going to waste.”

He disclosed that he and his development partners are engaged in discussions to secure about €5million in support from the world football governing body, FIFA, to facilitate the project’s implementation.

Speaking on Onua TV’s flagship morning show, Maakye, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the MCE emphasised that the Municipal Directorate has already secured a 45-acre plot of land with completed documentation, positioning them to initiate the project upon securing the requisite funds.

He underscored the importance of contributing their quota as government representatives, thereby collaborating with his partners to turn the vision into reality without fully looking up to the central government.

“We can’t rely solely on central government; hence, myself and my partners, Eco Group, are on the verge of securing approximately €5 million in support from World Football Association to establish a sports academy in the Wiawso Municipality,” he said.

He expressed optimism that besides facilitating the development of football talents within the community, the initiative will contribute to the nation’s overall football growth.

Mr. Gyasi was confident that upon completion, the academy will play a role in alleviating poverty among residents, as it will enable many to leverage their talents for livelihood.

“There are untapped talents, and I’m convinced that by pursuing this, we can transform the lives of numerous young individuals locally and beyond. The Assembly has secured a 45-acre plot of land, with documentation processes completed at the Lands Commission,” he stated.

Regarding government support, the MCE indicated that they are engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to ensure this initiative leaves a lasting impact for residents of the municipality and the nation at large.

“…so, we require government backing as we’re presently in liaison with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and this is a legacy I’m certain I’ll be immensely proud of,” he said in Twi.
