The parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sekondi, Nyamekye Blay Armah, is performing a sod-cutting ceremony to give relief to traders by working on the sorry state of the market.

The private legal practitioner has also promised to rehabilitate the St. Peter’s School which has been abandoned for over eight years.

Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanabapa Morning Show, Lawyer Blay, as he is called by many, indicated that traders are facing challenges in plying their trade due to the current state of the market.

According to him, the government, represented by the Member of Parliament, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has abandoned the traders in the market.

“They promised to build a new market but that never came to pass. Whenever I try to renovate the market, they will stop me with the excuse that it will be fixed but I cannot sit and look on whilst the traders suffer. Together with my team, we have decided to lay pavement blocks in parts of the market, particularly where they host the Tuesday market day. We believe this will provide a conducive environment for the traders to ply their business,” he noted.

W/R: STMA stops NDC parliamentary candidate from fixing dilapidated roofing of Sekondi market

The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly is responsible for activities and projects in the market.

According to him, a proposal for the rehabilitation project has been sent to the assembly for approval but there has not been any positive response.

“We have sent the designs to the STMA but they have still not given us any responses. I know they will not allow me to fix it but we shall still go ahead and work on the market,” he assured.

In a related development, the parliamentary candidate is unhappy about the current state of the Sekondi St. Peter’s School. According to him, the dilapidated structure of the school has been abandoned for over eight years, a situation which is affecting teaching and learning.

“Parts of the structure have collapsed and the students are being forced to study in the other part which is in a sorry state. The situation has been that for the past eight years and I’m working with my team to fix it. We shall build a new classroom block for them,” he promised.
