A prisoner has been trapped to death following a mudslide incident at Ahinkofi, near Ketan in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region.
The deceased, whose identity remains unknown, was reportedly working alongside three other inmates under the supervision of two prison officers when the incident occurred.
They had been contracted to work on the land of a private individual, which had previously been prepared using excavators.
According to reports, the inmates were clearing debris when the hilly mud suddenly caved in.
One of the prisoners was trapped under the debris.
Despite efforts to rescue him, he could not be saved.
“I’m an excavator operator. I was at my office when we were informed that someone had been trapped and our services were needed. We proceeded to the site and cleared the debris with our machines. That’s when we found him lying helpless, with a shovel and wheelbarrow beside him,” Mr. Koomson recounted.
The victim was rushed to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, Connect FM can confirm.
As at the time our reporters were leaving the hospital’s premises, the body was yet to be conveyed to the morgue as the hospital authorities were waiting for officials from the Prison Service before any further action.
