First National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Sofo Azorka will be arraigned before court on September 16, 2025 for allegedly assaulting Third Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawudu Osman during the Akwatia by-election.
The police announced in a statement on September 12, 2025 that Azorka was arrested on Wednesday, September 10 in Tamale and caution statement were obtained from him. His arrest follows investigations by the police into an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman at Akwatia.
According to the police, Azorka has been released on bail to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on September 16, 2025 at 10am where he will appear before the court.
The Police assured the public of thorough investigations into the matter and entreated all to remain calm as further development shall be communicated.
Fight erupted between NPP third National Vice Chairman, Osman Masawudu and NDC first National Vice Chairman, Awudu Sofo Azorka at Akwatia Lorry polling station during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.
TV3’s Armstrong Gold Alorgbey reported from the scene that the altercation started when the NPP Third Vice Chairman attempted to exchange greetings with Azorka at the polling station.
Azorka confronted Osman Masawudu over comments he allegedly made during a media interview. Azorka claimed his political counterpart had mentioned his name in a manner he was not pleased with.
He cautioned Osman Masawudu to stop mentioning his name, this led to an argument and back and forth between both. Azorka then slightly struck Masawudu in the face with his hand.
TV3’s Armstrong Alorgbey reported that the initial interaction which appeared as a joke between the duo suddenly plummeted into an argument which resulted in near fisticuffs.
Men accompanying both Chairmen joined the chaos but a swift intervention from police personnel who were close, separated the duo and restored calm at the Akwatia lorry poling station.
