In the Sokode Traditional Area of the Volta Region, traditional authorities have revoked a death curse invoked on President Akufo-Addo and Prof. Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) by some unidentified persons.
The unidentified persons had invoked curses on the premise of a scheduled conferment of an honorary doctorate on President Akufo-Addo by the Council of UHAS.
The UHAS Council had announced that it was going to honour the President for his contribution towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, as well as second-cycle education and the development of UHAS.
This decision has faced a stern opposition from a section of the youth in the Volta region who say the President has not contributed anything meaningfully towards the state of the University established by late President Mills.
At a press conference held by the group who align with the NDC, it expressed its opposition to the decision and demanded the university authorities to withdraw it, an action the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regional caucus described as frivolous.
Some youth of the region who got displeased with the decision invoked the spirit of the late President, John Evans Atta Mills, to kill President Akufo-Addo and the Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Prof. Lydia Aziato whilst embarking on the ceremony.
They poured libation, slaughtered ram, and streamed its blood across the road, at the entrance of the University’s main campus.
V/R: Youth group urges UHAS authorities not to award honorary doctorate degree to Akufo-Addo
“We heard that they are saying it was not you Prof Mills who established the University and that it was Akufo-Addo so they want to honour him. Prof. Mills, you led the establishment of the University. If today they are saying that you are not the one, I am handing them over to you to judge.
“When they set off for the honorary doctorate to be conferred on President Akufo-Addo for establishing the University, strike them dead before they get to this very spot.
“Prof Lydia Aziato, the day you receive them, whoever is scheduled to speak at the ceremony should vomit blood when he gets to this very spot,” said the leader of the group.
The Sokode Traditional Authorities intervened swiftly and performed a counter-ritual to revoke the curse, explaining that UHAS is in Sokode Land, hence people from other communities have no right to perform any ritual on their land, without their knowledge.
The Dutor of Sokode Traditional Area, Togbe Awee Japhet Amoako, who addressed the media explained that they intended to annul the curse to ensure no calamity befalls anyone who would travel to attend the event Monday, July 29, 2024.
“This is our land and you need to ask permission before you perform any rituals here. The school belongs to the world. We the people of Sokode are not against anybody. Development is in phases. Some will construct schools, others will build roads, and others will build toilets and markets.
“That is development. I am telling you whatever evil that they think will occur here, it will not. Sokode Paramountcy has cancelled everything,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, preparations are ongoing unabated for the conferment of the honorary doctorate on President Akufo-Addo and the commissioning of the China Phase Two expansion project.
