The Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has pledged to lock the doors of the chamber of the House to combat late coming amongst the Members of Parliament from next year.

He says the practice where he the Speaker has to get to the chamber to wait for the lawmakers is not done anywhere except Ghana.

The man who served as Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo and prior to his election as Speaker, was the longest-serving legislator in Ghana’s Fourth Republic said if the directive fails to yield fruits, he would be compelled to begin sittings either at 2 or 4pm, rather than in the forenoon.

He said he will lock the entrances at 10am for some time before he reopens for the late comers to have entry.

Mr. Bagbin was addressing Parliament when he made the statement.

“There is nowhere in the world where the Speaker will have to go and sit and wait for MPs to come in, it does not happen.

“So please from the first meeting of the fourth session of the Eight Parliament of the Fourth Republic, at 10 am, the doors will be locked,” he stated.

He continued that “it will take some time before it will be opened. If we are not able to comply with it, let’s all agree sittings will start in the afternoon.”
