A flag bearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Addai-Nimoh says, the party’s super delegates’ conference is becoming a source of disunity ìn the NPP.

Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin, he suggested to the party to do away with that process.

He was not happy about the way the party handled the super delegates’ conference which was held recently.

He pointed out that, the purpose of the election is not to get a winner but rather just to shortlist the number of candidates.

“This system is not to select a winner. I was one of those agitating for that process. It was not intended to choose a winner,” he stated.

He said the last edition was supposed to trim the 10 aspirants to five but not to tag anyone as a winner or loser, a development which breeds disaffection and disunity.

Background

The New Patriotic Party held a special delegates’ conference to reduce the 10 aspirants who were contesting the flag bearer position to five.

The exercise which was held on August 26, 2023 produced candidates Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Owusu Afriyie-Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh to sail through to the final stage of the election.

Mr. Addai-Nimoh made the top five after Boakye Agyarko pulled out of a tie-breaker that was supposed to be organised between them. He said the modalities outlined in the party’s regulations which the Election Committee of the party changed was unlawful, and wouldn’t want to be associated with an illegality.

Meanwhile, four candidates will now be contesting in the November 4 primary after Alan Kyerematen opted out of the exercise and subsequently resigning from the party to contest as an independent candidate.

He said his agents were harrased without any punishment for the perpetrators whilst the election was also skewed in one candidate’s favour.
