The Catholic Bishops Conference has called for non-partisan conduct and strict adherence to constitutional principles in the ongoing procedures concerning the removal of the Chief Justice (CJ).

In a press statement released on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Bishops expressed grave concern over what they described as increasing political tension surrounding the suspension of the Chief Justice.

“A healthy, functioning democracy equally demands an independent and credible judiciary one that is entirely free from political interference. Justice is the indispensable cornerstone of national cohesion; without it, grievances fester and violence finds fertile ground,” the statement read.

The Catholic Bishops emphasized that any action, whether perceived or actual that undermines the judiciary’s independence would set a dangerous precedent.

“It is in this critical regard that we view the current tensions arising from the suspension of the Chief Justice. While we fully acknowledge the necessity of due process, we caution strenuously against any action perceived or real that could compromise the impartiality or independence of the judiciary.”

The Bishop Conference stressed that the removal of a sitting Chief Justice is a matter of profound national significance, and must be handled with the highest level of integrity and legal diligence.

“This process must be scrupulously guided by constitutional principles, absolute procedural fairness, and unwavering respect for the doctrine of the separation of powers. Any precedent that appears to place the judiciary at the mercy of the executive risks irreparably eroding public trust in the very institution that citizens rely upon for justice.”

The Catholic Bishops urged all political actors and stakeholders to act conscientiously and with restraint.

“In light of these grave concerns, we urge all stakeholders to act with the utmost conscientiousness, safeguarding both the inviolable rule of law and the dignity of the judiciary.”
