Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held in Accra on Wednesday, September 17, the Minister confirmed that all technical assessments on the line have been completed and commercial services will start soon.

“We have done a test run on the Tema–Mpakadan rail line and it ended yesterday [Tuesday],” Mr Nikpe stated.

“So by 1st October, God willing, we will start the first operations from Tema to Mpakadan. We have finished with the test runs, and everything is set for us to start operations.”

The Minister also disclosed that the necessary rolling stock has been made ready. “The two coaches have been fixed and that is why we are able to do the test runs,” he added.

The Tema–Mpakadan rail line forms part of the Eastern Railway Corridor project, which is expected to play a critical role in enhancing transportation between the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.

Beyond matters of salaries, the Minister disclosed that the ministry is also collaborating with security agencies and the Lands Commission to remove encroachers from railway lines.

“We are launching a campaign to clear encroachers from the railway’s right of way and secure land titles for railway lands. This will allow contractors access to the sites needed to advance railway projects,” he explained.
